The picture produced by a camera is a beginning, a starting point. Although the goal is to capture photos that resemble your impressions, getting images that match those ideas solely with a camera is challenging. Editing is the necessary and final step to getting the most from your photographs.

Apps like Adobe Lightroom and Apple Photos essentially have the same tools. PHOTO FINISH is universal and provides a practical approach to image editing that shows you how to “finish a photo” using simple adjustments available on nearly any photo editing app.

PHOTO FINISH is an approachable way to learn photo editing. The class consists of four weekly in-person sessions and a BONUS personal virtual session to wrap it all up. Best of all, you can retake the class anytime at no additional cost.

Session 1

Who knew digital photography requires more than a camera? LAUNCH clears the confusion and introduces you to the hardware and software options to make editing your images more efficient and enjoyable. You’ll also learn about essential accessories and online services for transferring, protecting, and backing up your valuable photos.

Although image editing is subjective, every photo has core data or information that affects its appearance. CORRECT explores the standard edits commonly made for all photographs, such as exposure, white balance, clarity and detail, and noise control, to fix—or rescue—a picture. Learn to think with an editing mind and begin to get the most from your images.

Session 3

Moving beyond basic edits, ENHANCE examines the more expressive side of photo editing. Let your imagination run wild as you learn to interpret your ideas better through black-and-white conversion, color grading for a more stylized look, high dynamic range (HDR), and more. You’ll also learn to keep a tidy picture frame with basic touch-ups and object removal.

Putting the ideas learned into practice, CRITIQUE kindly evaluates and applies the teaching using student images as examples. You will receive thoughtful guidance on better image capture while observing how the instructor would approach editing your photos. Participation is optional; you can just watch and interact if you’re more comfortable.

Bonus Session

Photo editing software can initially seem intimidating. That’s natural and expected, especially if you’re new to photography. Everyone learns at their own pace. REVIEW is a personal 30-minute one-on-one follow-up session via Zoom during which you can ask questions and get clarification on topics discussed. Screen takeover is optional.

Not for class, but you will need a computer, tablet, or smartphone to edit your photos at home or on the go. Don't have one yet or need a new one? In Session 1: LAUNCH, we discuss hardware and software options to help you make the right choice.

Most photo editing apps do the same thing—creativity doesn't reside in an app but in the idea behind the picture.

 

PHOTO FINISH uses the cloud-based Adobe Lightroom for in-class demonstration, a user-friendly powerhouse ideal for enthusiasts and pros alike. But you can use nearly any editing app to achieve similar results.

Learning photography and image editing can be challenging. If you need help, I am available before, after, and between sessions. You may also retake the class, whether in whole or in part, at no cost.

Life happens. If you cannot make all four sessions, you can jump in on another class that week and receive the same material. Classes are monthly; make it up anytime.

All ages are welcome to attend, but the majority of our students are adults. Although we have had students as young as 12 years old participate without issue, it all comes down to your child's ability to follow along. You can opt for a Personal Session if the class is too challenging.

 

Note: Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Classes are held at Haven Collective, 2025 Riverside Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43221 (between Trabue Rd. and 5th Ave.) The building is wheelchair accessible with ample free parking.

Although rare, class cancellations can occur. You may switch to another class, opt for a base Personal Session, or receive a full refund. Single-session cancellations for inclement weather or personal reasons will receive a make-up session.

I sincerely believe you will learn A LOT and thoroughly enjoy your experience. The information and instruction are sound and tested; unless under exceptional circumstances or a class is canceled, refunds are not available.
