PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTION

Do you prefer a more personalized experience? Individual instruction affords the same level of training you receive in a class, only with greater scheduling flexibility and dedicated attention. Whether embarking on your creative journey or advancing your present abilities, personal coaching is a wonderful way to learn photography and explore paths specific to your interests.

Personal instruction is ideal for continuing your education beyond the Beginner Series, as well as a refresher or covering the basics of your camera in anticipation of a big trip or special occasion. Invest in yourself and learn to capture the images you’ve always wanted at a pace tailored to you.

Super Flexible Schedule

Base 4-hour session: $300
Only $50 per additional hour

You may halve a base session, which is recommended to help you retain the information; use the first session to get up to speed with your camera and the second for clarification and further learning. Personal instruction can occur at our location or yours.

What's Possible

Everyone is on a unique path, and personal instruction allows you to focus on areas specific to your interests and skill level, learning what you want on your schedule. Although in-person instruction offers the optimal experience, you can opt for virtual sessions if circumstances or location are factors.

Cam Slam

Are you short on time or patience? Personal sessions allow you to get up and running quickly with your camera. Much more than an introduction or "crash course," you will honest to goodness learn how to take better photographs using Manual mode and Aperture Priority.

Includes a step-by-step PDF with practice exercises.

Take a Class

An 8-hour block divided into three sessions provides enough time to cover the material for Beginner ONE or TWO. Although this time does not include a private outing, you're welcome to join the outing of an upcoming class. Includes a full copy of the material used for class in PDF format.

Photo Editing

The image from a camera is not gospel; it's the starting point. Beginning on your skill level, learn how to “finish a picture” using adjustments available on nearly any photo app.

Editing photographs is as personal and subjective as capturing them, and private instruction, whether face-to-face or virtual, allows you to discuss the reasons behind making specific edits with the instructor using YOUR PHOTOS rather than watching an online tutorial.

Smartphone photography has come a long way and will continue to improve. Learn how to tap into this amazing device's imaging power and begin to capture photos you never knew were possible. Timed to Perfection

FOUR HOURS OF INSTRUCTION

Learning how to use a camera is more challenging than many people realize. With all the misinformation about learning “pro” photography on the weekend, or worse, in only a few hours, it’s no wonder people think using a camera is easy—until they try. Brief camera introductions are OK but only point out the way, giving you just enough information to “be dangerous.” But you want more than that with your photography.

All personal instruction requires a BASE session, which includes four hours of teaching that you can use in a single or double session. Halving a base session is recommended to help you retain the information; use the first session to get your footing and the second for reinforcement and guidance. Experience shows that this time and approach are ideal for grasping the fundamentals and continuing to learn independently.

Can I add more time?

Of course! A base session is only a beginning meant to establish a solid foundation. You may add more time to continue your education if you want further instruction.

What about cancellations?

Shutterbug: Although quite rare, cancellations can occur. Sessions canceled due to inclement weather or personal reasons will receive a make-up session. You may receive a refund if we cannot find a suitable replacement date.

You: Life happens. Shutterbug will make every reasonable effort to reschedule if you cannot attend your session. Please note: reschedules are complementary and should only occur if necessary. Repeated cancellations or a prolonged time in rescheduling do not qualify for a refund.

Where are you located?

Classes are held at Haven Collective, 2025 Riverside Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43221 (between Trabue Rd. and 5th Ave.) The building is wheelchair accessible with ample free parking.

Personal instruction can occur at our location or yours, whether in your home or “in the field.” Although unlikely, there may be a travel fee depending on how far the area is beyond the I-270 outer belt. Please call (614) 427-1671 with questions.

Is there an age limit?

All ages are welcome to learn. However, the majority of my students are adults. Although I've had students as young as 12 years old participate without issue, it all comes down to your child's ability to follow along.
